OSTIA ANTICA + LUNCH at the new harbor with seaview
Together with Pompeii, Ostia Antica is the largest archaeological site in the world.
Even if more than half of the city is still buried, the current visit route with public monuments, residential houses and production facilities offers an amazing testimony of ancient daily life.
Before the crippling flood of 1557 the riverbed was significantly different from the current one, its waters ran along the northern part of the city and the coastline was closer than it is today to the buildings.
According to the legend, Ancus Marcius king of Rome, founded Ostia in 620 BC as a crucial spot to make use of the salt pans at the mouth of the Tiber. The oldest archaeological remains however, date back much later, to the second half of the 4th century BC, and belong to an armed camp (Lat. castrum) built in tufa blocks: it was built by roman settlers to protect the river’s mouth and the Lazio coast.
Ostia had mixed fortunes up to the third century AD. when, due to the increasing navigation difficulties of the Tiber, its port function went into decline.
Inaugurated in June 2001, the harbour is located just south of the mouth of the Tevere river, 10 minutes car ride from Fiumicino-Leonardo Da Vinci International airport and from Ostia Antica splendid ruins, in the Ostia’s seaplane base area, where Pasolini’s Memorial is. The position is a strategical one also for its connections to Rome city centre within easy reach by the metro line.
The complex represents a modern concept of turistic harbour, based on integrated structures capable of offering a wide rage of services and facilities at sea and on land, opportunities both for business and for leisure.
The harbour facility, built on a 200.000 squared metres surface, totally provided with Wi-Fi, includes:› 833 boat slip with the possibility to accomodate mega yachts up to 60 metres long;
› 80 shops for commercial activities and restaurants, diving center and also apartments and offices;
› around 1.200 metres of promenade, provided with bike path and with an access to the waterfront;
› over 10.000 mq of exibition areas;
› an amphitheater which has capacity for 750 seats (outdoor);
› 1.400 parking spaces both indoor and outdoor;
› shipyard provided with Travel Lift (capacity: 400 tons);
› law enforcement offices and headquarters – Guardia di Finanza, Carabinieri, Polizia and Italian Coast Guard.The harbour represents an oasis protected against noise and traffic, a relaxing place where it is possible to stroll, play sports, plan a vacation or simply spend few leisure hours.
The harbour’s conformation and geographical position make it a perfect place where theatrical events and performances, sporting, artistic, cultural, promotional and communicational initiatives may take place.
